Kolkata Reports Storm, Political Crisis, Cyber Scam, and Metro Expansion

Kolkata: On 8 June 2026, the city experienced strong winds reaching speeds of up to 60 km/h accompanied by heavy rainfall. Several trees were uprooted, and waterlogging affected multiple areas, causing disruption.

Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) faces political uncertainty following the resignation of Mayor Firhad Hakim. Additionally, a 65-year-old senior citizen from Regent Park suffered a loss of approximately ₹4.4 crore due to a "digital arrest" cyber scam, with police currently investigating the matter. In a separate incident near Beckbagan naka, a biker assaulted a traffic sergeant on duty and has been arrested. Furthermore, West Bengal has initiated the process of signing a MoU to implement the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY health scheme to benefit millions in the state. Kolkata Metro is set to receive 60 new modern trains over the next five years, alongside major railway projects planned in Bengal.
