PAU-KVK Hoshiarpur Celebrates World Environment Day under Khet Bachao Abiyaan

PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Hoshiarpur celebrated World Environment Day under the Khet Bachao Abhiyaan at Sunrise International Convent School, Mannanhana, on 5th June 2026. At the outset of the programme, the School Principal, Mrs. Kuljit Kaur Sandhu, welcomed the KVK team and highlighted the significance of World Environment Day. She emphasized the need to create environmental awareness among students and encouraged them to actively participate in activities aimed at protecting natural resources and promoting a cleaner and greener environment.
During the camp, Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), KVK Hoshiarpur, delivered a detailed lecture on the activities and services provided by the KVK. He informed the participants about various facilities such as soil testing and farmer training programmes offered by the KVK.. He also highlighted the educational opportunities available at the Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana and the PAU-College of Agriculture, Ballowal Saunkhri, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar.
Dr. Ajaib Singh, Assistant Professor (Agricultural Engineering), emphasized the role students can play in environmental conservation. He elaborated on various sources of pollution and addressed the issue of crop residue burning, explaining how PAU is assisting farmers in managing paddy straw through sustainable and eco-friendly technologies.
Dr. Karmvir Singh Garcha, Assistant Professor (Vegetable Science) discussed the importance of a balanced diet and highlighted the role of kitchen gardening in ensuring household nutritional security. He explained the PAU recommended models of vegetable kitchen garden and fruit and nutrition gardens. In addition, he spoke about natural farming practices and their potential in providing pesticide residue free food for daily consumption.
At the end of the programme, Mr. Sukhjinder Singh, Physical Education Teacher of the school proposed the vote of thanks and sought KVK help in establishing integrated nutrition garden at KVK to strengthen students connection with agriculture and environmental conservation.
