AMU Observes World Environment Day with Plantation Drives and Awareness Activities

ALIGARH, June 5: Aligarh Muslim University observed World Environment Day 2026 through plantation drives, landscaping initiatives and awareness programmes jointly organised by the Department of Land and Gardens, University Games Committee and A.B.K. High School (Girls), reaffirming the University's commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable living.

The Department of Land and Gardens, in collaboration with the University Games Committee, organised a plantation drive and landscaping programme at the Yusuff Ali Aquatics and Sports Complex. The initiative was inaugurated by Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Mohd. Mohsin Khan, who planted saplings and called for collective efforts to preserve ecological balance and safeguard natural resources for future generations. He also inspected various facilities of the University Games Committee and assured their further improvement.

The programme was graced by Dean of Students’ Welfare Prof. Mohammad Athar Ansari, University Engineer Prof. Izharul Haq Farooqi, President of the Gymkhana Club and Deputy Proctor Prof. Iffat Asghar, Member In-charge of Land and Gardens Prof. Anwar Shahzad, Secretary of the Games Committee Prof. Yusuf Uzzaman Khan, Dr Badruzzaman Siddiqui and other university functionaries.

As part of the greening initiative, ornamental plants along with Silver Oak and Terminalia mantaly trees were planted at prominent locations within the Sports Complex. Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Anwar Shahzad emphasised the importance of regular plantation drives and sustainable landscaping practices in strengthening environmental awareness and improving the campus ecosystem.

Meanwhile, A.B.K. High School (Girls) marked the occasion with a series of educational and awareness-building activities under the guidance of Head Mistress-cum-Vice Principal Dr. Saba Hasan. A special assembly featured speeches by students on environmental conservation, climate change, pollution, biodiversity and sustainable living.

Addressing the students, Dr. Saba Hasan urged them to adopt environmentally responsible habits such as conserving water, reducing waste, maintaining cleanliness and planting trees. She emphasised that individual efforts can make a meaningful contribution to protecting the environment.

A highlight of the programme was a nature walk at the nearby Union Hall campus, where students explored the natural surroundings and learned about the ecological importance of various plant species. A plantation drive was also organised, during which students and teachers planted saplings and pledged to nurture them.

Abdullah School celebrated World Environment Day under the supervision of Superintendent Mrs. Umra Zaheer. The programme featured a plantation drive and an environmental awareness seminar for teachers, organised in line with the theme, “Inspired by Nature". For Climate. For Our Future.”

Addressing the seminar, Mrs Umra Zaheer emphasised environmental conservation, climate responsibility and sustainable practices. The event concluded with participants taking a pledge to protect nature and promote a greener, more sustainable future.
