Announcement | Tramjatra and Placemaking India Team Up for World Environment Day Tram Event

4 june 2026, KOLKATA — In a vibrant fusion of heritage, community engagement, and environmental advocacy, Tramjatra and the Calcutta Tram Users Association (CTUA) have officially announced a new creative partnership with Placemaking India. To kick off this exciting collaboration, the organizations are inviting citizens to join the Environment Day Tramjatra today, June 5, 2026.
This year's initiative aligns with the United Nations’ designated World Environment Day theme, “Climate Action,” which underscores the urgent need to combat climate change, slash carbon emissions, and accelerate the transition toward a sustainable, low-carbon economy.
A Rolling Canvas for Sustainability
To honor the occasion, a special heritage tram has been transformed into a moving art installation. The decorated tram is designed to draw immediate attention to pressing environmental challenges while simultaneously highlighting practical, everyday solutions for sustainable living.
Route & Timing Details:
Date: June 5, 2026
Time: 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Route: Departs from Gariahat Depot, traveling via Esplanade Terminus, and concluding at Shyambazar Terminus.
Greening the Depots
In alignment with the Central Government's special environment programme, the event will also feature a civic greening initiative. Newly elected members will participate in ceremonial tree-planting drives, planting saplings across all three major transit hubs: Gariahat, Esplanade, and Shyambazar.
By utilizing Kolkata’s iconic, zero-emission trams, the organizers hope to remind commuters that the city's vintage transit system remains one of its most potent weapons in the modern fight for climate action. Citizens, environmentalists, and tram enthusiasts are all encouraged to gather along the route to witness and support the journey.
