PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hoshiarpur organizes awareness camp on balanced use of fertilizers

PAU-Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Hoshiarpur recently organized an awareness camp at village Raghwal of Bhunga block under the campaign on the balanced use of fertilizers. The programme was organized in collaboration with Khalsa Aid International on the theme of soil testing campaign.

During the camp, Dr. Maninder Singh Bons, Associate Director (Training), KVK Hoshiarpur, delivered a detailed lecture on the importance of soil testing and the use of recommended doses of fertilizers in kharif crops. He further cautioned the farmers to not overuse nitrogen and phosphorous fertilizers but to go for need based application only. He elaborated on the methods of soil testing, precautions to be observed while collecting soil samples and the appropriate timing of soil sampling. Dr. Bons also highlighted the various services offered by KVK Hoshiarpur for the benefit of the farming community. He further informed the participants about the soil and water testing facilities available at KVK and motivated them to utilize these services for scientific and judicious fertilizer use.

Dr. Karmvir Singh Garcha, Assistant Professor (Vegetable Science), KVK Hoshiarpur emphasized the importance of integrating green manure and farmyard manure with recommended fertilizer doses to maintain soil health and improve crop productivity. He also shared information about the biofertilizers recommended by Punjab Agricultural University for enhancing the productivity of kharif crops.

Later in the programme Gagandeep Singh from Khalsa Aid International thanked the KVK team for their cooperation and motivated farmers to get their soil tested at the earliest to avoid the unnecessary use of expensive chemical fertilizers.

The programme was attended by the sarpanches of nearby villages, including Kamlesh Kaur, village Raghwal, Kishori Lal, village Ram Tatwali, Sukhbir Singh, village Kathohar and Madan Lal, village Manhota along with other progressive farmers. The programme concluded with an interactive session during which farmers’ queries were addressed satisfactorily.

A method demonstration on the correct procedure for soil sample collection was also conducted during the programme. The soil samples from these villages will be tested at KVK and the results will be communicated to the farmers before sowing for optimum use of fertilizers.

On this occasion, seed of kharif maize was made available for sale purposes to the farmers and PAU literature was also provided.
