Telangana Formation Day: A Historic Journey of Struggle, Identity, and Progress..

Hyderabad June 01:

June 2 is a day of immense pride and historical significance for the people of Telangana. On this day in 2014, Telangana officially became the 29th state of India, marking the culmination of a decades long struggle for self governance, social justice, and regional development. Telangana Formation Day is not merely a celebration of statehood; it is a tribute to the sacrifices, aspirations, and unwavering determination of millions who fought for their identity and rights.

Historical Background.

The history of Telangana is deeply rooted in the cultural and political evolution of the Deccan region. Before India's independence, Telangana was part of the Hyderabad State under the rule of the Nizam. Following the integration of Hyderabad State into the Indian Union in 1948 through "Operation Polo," Telangana continued as part of Hyderabad State until 1956.
In 1956, under the States Reorganisation Act, the Telugu speaking Telangana region was merged with the Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh. The merger was based on the Gentlemen's Agreement, which promised safeguards for Telangana's employment, education, and resource allocation. However, many people in Telangana believed these safeguards were not adequately implemented, leading to widespread dissatisfaction.

The Telangana Movement.

The demand for a separate Telangana state emerged strongly in the late 1960s. The 1969 Telangana Agitation witnessed large scale protests led by students, intellectuals, employees, and political activists. Hundreds of people participated in demonstrations demanding justice and separate statehood.
Although the movement lost momentum in subsequent years, the demand remained alive in public consciousness. In 2001, the formation of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) under the leadership of K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) gave fresh impetus to the movement. The issue gained national attention through peaceful protests, public meetings, rallies, and democratic campaigns.

The movement reached its peak between 2009 and 2013, with widespread support from various sections of society, including students, farmers, government employees, lawyers, artists, and civil society organizations.

Birth of Telangana State.

After extensive discussions and parliamentary procedures, the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, was passed by the Parliament of India. Consequently, Telangana officially came into existence on June 2, 2014.

The newly formed state comprised 10 districts initially:
1. Adilabad
2. Nizamabad
3. Karimnagar
4. Medak
5. Warangal
6. Khammam
