Convergence of Hindu Mahasabha and BJP on Savarkar Jayanti; Mahasabha Claims BJP is the Political Platform for Sanatanis

KOLKATA, 28 MAY 2026: Marking the birth anniversary of Veer Savarkar, the city of Kolkata witnessed a significant political development as the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, one of India’s oldest socio-political organizations, announced its decision to politically merge its alignment with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
At a press conference held at the Kolkata Press Club, the Hindu Mahasabha announced that approximately 10,000 of its workers across West Bengal have officially taken up online membership of the BJP. Moving forward, the Mahasabha will function strictly as a social organization, while integrating politically with the BJP to ensure Hindu unity.
Led by State President Dr. Chandrachur Goswami, around a hundred members of the Hindu Mahasabha's state committee formally acquired active BJP membership by contributing a subscription fee of ₹100 online. Taking a solemn pledge, the members stated that since the current "double-engine" government of the BJP is working on the ideals of Sanatani nationalism, they will fight as dedicated soldiers of the BJP in the political arena.
Explaining the rationale behind this historic step, Dr. Chandrachur Goswami noted the deep historical roots connecting the organizations. He highlighted that Dr. Keshav Baliram Hedgewar and Guruji MS Golwalkar—the founders and architects of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which the BJP looks up to as its parent organization—were originally members of the Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha. The RSS later gave rise to the Jana Sangh, which ultimately evolved into the BJP. Therefore, Dr. Goswami argued, the BJP continues to carry the "DNA" of the Hindu Mahasabha.
"We do not view the establishment of the first-ever BJP government in West Bengal—the birthplace of former Hindu Mahasabha President Syama Prasad Mookerjee—merely as an electoral victory. It is a triumph of Sanatani nationalist ideology and the foundational step toward establishing Hindu Swaraj," Dr. Goswami stated.
He warned that the path ahead is challenging as anti-India political forces are uniting against the BJP. He added that they cannot allow groups carrying what he termed "anti-India Mughal DNA" to harm the country again, making the political synergy between the Hindu Mahasabha and the BJP an absolute necessity.
However, the Mahasabha clarified that it will maintain its independent identity as a social organization to work in fields like culture, social service, sports, and the welfare of the working-class community. Furthermore, its digital wing will collaborate with "Swastik News" and the "Web Journalists' Association of India" to promote various public welfare schemes of the government and work toward establishing India as a Vishwaguru (world leader).
Following the press conference, Hindu Mahasabha members carried portraits of Veer Savarkar to the BJP state office and the RSS headquarters at Keshab Bhavan, where they distributed sweets to celebrate the occasion.
Political observers note that Dr. Chandrachur Goswami had previously served as the youngest member of the BJP’s State Intellectual Committee and the Lokkho Sonar Bangla elite panel speaker list until 2021. Experts believe that this formal integration of Dr. Goswami and his organization will undoubtedly strengthen the Bharatiya Janata Party and the wider Sangh Parivar in the region.
The event was attended by several prominent state leaders of the Hindu Mahasabha, including Anamika Mondal, Sandipan Sarkar, Dr. Debabrata Dutta, Srimanta Palit, Ashutosh Majumdar, Antara Mitra, Shailendra Singh, Payel Mukherjee, Abhirup Bose, Payel Banerjee, Risha Basak, and Priyabrata Bhattacharya, among others.
