West Bengal Groups Dispute Over Cow Slaughter Permission in Belur
Belur: On 23 May 2026, the CPI(M) submitted a letter to Belur Police Station seeking permission for cow slaughter during Eid. In response, the Hindu Ekta Sangh also wrote to Belur Police Station emphasizing that cow slaughter is completely prohibited under Section 4 of the West Bengal Animal Slaughter Control Act, 1950.
The Hindu Ekta Sangh cited the Supreme Court's Ashutosh Lahiri case, stating that cow sacrifice is not a mandatory part of Islam. They further noted that legally, goats and sheep are available for sacrifice. The group urged the administration to adhere to the law and ensure no illegal exemptions are given under Section 12 for cows. They emphasized maintaining law and order is a collective responsibility.
