Guwahati: Gauhati University Students Protest Fee Hike and Demand Fee Waiver

Guwahati: Late-night tension gripped the campus of Gauhati University as students from various organisations, including ruling party-backed, opposition-affiliated, and independent student wings, jointly launched a major protest demanding the implementation of free admission under the fee waiver scheme and the reduction of multiple university fees.

The protest intensified on Monday evening when hundreds of students staged a blockade on the national highway near the university campus, causing heavy traffic disruption. Protesters alleged that despite repeated appeals, many students continued to face difficulties regarding fee concessions and rising admission-related charges. Senior police officials and civil administration members later arrived and engaged with students, but the blockade ended only after a late-night discussion between student representatives and Vice-Chancellor Professor Nonigopal Mahanta. The administration assured that the demands would be examined seriously, leading students to call off the protest. Student leaders stated they would continue monitoring the situation and may resume protests if the measures are not implemented.
