Coronavirus Spread In Singapore : COVID-19 Case Count Reaches 12,700

Singapore, May 23 – AIMA Media International Update News: The COVID-19 virus is surging once again in Singapore. The fact that the number of COVID-19 cases has risen by over 4,000 in just a single week is a cause for serious concern.

On average, 73 people are falling ill with the virus daily in Singapore.
Official statistics released on Thursday indicate that approximately 12,700 COVID-19 cases were recorded in Singapore between May 10 and May 16. In the preceding week, this figure stood at 8,000. Concurrently, the average daily number of hospital admissions rose from 56 a week ago to 73. However, the Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA) stated in a press release that the average number of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) cases remains at one per day. The agency affirmed that the government's public hospitals are capable of managing this increase in cases.

The Communicable Diseases Agency (CDA) noted that the rise in infections could be attributed to several factors, including waning immunity within the population. The NB.1.8.1 sub-variant which evolved from the JN.1 strain continues to be the predominant COVID-19 variant circulating in Singapore. This variant accounts for more than half of the cases that have been locally sequenced. The agency stated that COVID-19 vaccines continue to provide protection against the currently circulating variant. The agency further noted that it is closely monitoring the rise in infections, as this virus along with other respiratory illnesses is currently spreading within the local community. However, the Communicable Diseases Agency(CDA) clarified that there is currently no indication that the locally circulating variants spread more rapidly or cause more severe illness compared to previous strains.
