Kolkata: Ram Mohan Mission Celebrates Raja Rammohan Roy's 254th Birth Anniversary
Kolkata: Ram Mohan Mission, established in 1978 by Sankar Biswas, IRS, commemorates Raja Rammohan Roy's 254th birth anniversary on May 22, 2026. Named after Bharat Pathik Raja Rammohan Roy, the Mission focuses on eradicating social evils such as female foeticide, child marriage, child labour, dowry, and domestic violence. With about 100 volunteers and multiple campaigns led by founder President Rev. Sankar Biswas, the Mission has garnered appreciation from former Presidents Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil and Sri Pranab Mukherjee, along with national leaders including Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, Sri Lal Krishna Advani, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Mission has established schools for modern education and advanced eye hospitals in urban and rural areas to prevent and control blindness in West Bengal. It annually awards the Raja Rammohan Mission Puraskar to distinguished personalities in science, art, culture, social work, and sports. Notable recipients include Dr. J.V. Narlikar, Dr. K. Kasturirangan, Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, and Dr. Anil Kakodkar. On this occasion, meritorious students receive the Krishna Biswas Memorial Scholarship. The 2026 Puraskar will be awarded to Dr. G. Immanuel, Chairman of CISCE, and Sri Smaranjit Chakraborty at Nazarul Mancha Auditorium, Kolkata.
The event emphasizes raising public awareness against social evils and promotes prevention and control of blindness, especially in rural West Bengal. The Mission appeals for cooperation from media and the public to support its social initiatives and ensure the success of its campaigns to save and educate the girl child nationwide.
