BBMB Principal Medical Officer: Stay Hydrated to Beat the Heat; Avoid Going Out Unnecessarily
Hoshiarpur / DaljeetAjnoha/May 19
Following instructions from Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) Chief Engineer Rakesh Gupta, BBMB Hospital Principal Medical Officer Dr Surinder Pal Singh has issued health advisories in view of rising temperatures.
Dr Singh said that adopting simple precautions can prevent the adverse effects of extreme heat. The weather department has warned of continued high temperatures in the coming days, so everyone must remain alert.
He stressed that maintaining body temperature requires adequate fluid intake. People should drink plenty of fluids such as plain water, lassi, lemonade, fruit juices, coconut water and oral rehydration salts (ORS). He advised avoiding going out between 12pm and 3pm or during intense sunlight, when the sun’s heat is strongest. Special care should be taken of children and the elderly.
Dr Singh added that heat and heatstroke can more severely affect newborns, pregnant women, outdoor workers, farmers, homeless people, persons living on streets and pavements, people with mental or physical illnesses—particularly those with heart disease and hypertension—obese individuals, and athletes performing strenuous exercise outdoors. These groups therefore need extra precautions. Anyone experiencing heat-related health problems should consult a doctor at their nearest government health centre.
