Hoshiarpur to Be Made Dengue-Free, Says Deputy Commissioner Ashika Jain
Hoshiarpur/ Daljeet Ajnoha /May 18
The district administration has launched extensive preparations to prevent seasonal diseases such as dengue and chikungunya. Deputy Commissioner Ashika Jain chaired a key district-level meeting at the district administrative complex today, attended by heads of various departments. She also constituted a core committee under a Dengue Action Plan to monitor awareness and prevention activities across the district, and vowed that the administration will leave no stone unturned to make Hoshiarpur dengue-free.
Addressing the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner stressed that all departments must act with full seriousness and responsibility before the monsoon to prevent the spread of dengue and chikungunya. She instructed department heads to ensure there is no water accumulation in their offices, premises or surrounding areas, warning that even a small lapse can lead to disease spread.
The DC directed the Civil Surgeon, Hoshiarpur, to form special teams at the block level comprising representatives from the health department, police, municipal councils and non-governmental organizations. These teams will conduct house-to-house inspections at least twice a week, raise public awareness, identify potential dengue-prone areas and ensure necessary remedial action. The DC also urged the municipal corporation and municipal councils to treat the matter with urgency.
Volunteers from the Red Cross Society will play a key role in the campaign by surveying homes and shops. The campaign aims to educate residents about dengue and chikungunya and to curb their transmission. During surveys, teams are checking coolers, flowerpots, old tyres, water containers and other vessels for stagnant water and ensuring it is emptied. Residents are being advised to empty, clean and dry water-holding containers at least once a week to prevent Aedes mosquito larvae from breeding.
The Deputy Commissioner explained that Aedes mosquitoes breed in clean water and are the primary carriers of dengue and chikungunya, making public cooperation essential for prevention. Larvicide spraying will be carried out in high-risk areas as needed to check mosquito reproduction.
Appealing to district residents, Ashika Jain asked them to keep their homes and surroundings clean and follow the health departments guidelines to help make Hoshiarpur dengue- and chikungunya-free. Present at the meeting were Additional Deputy Commissioner (Development) Nikas Kumar, Municipal Commissioner Jyoti Bala Mattu, SDM Hoshiarpur Parmpreet Singh, Civil Surgeon Dr. Mandeep Kamal and other officials.
