Happy to have finished the small documentary on Gandhi's Harijan Basti-( gandhi:s Harjan village). located in Lutyens Delhi, in a small corner. The effort is to focus on Gandhi's commitment to poor and so called "untouchables'. He lived for 7 months during the interim govnt prior to India's freedom in that Bhagi( scavengers colony) for seven months in 1946 to prove to the world his commitment to lower castes. According to an old scholar who lived through it, Gandhi ensured , there is no caste mention or imprint on teh constitution and insisted on reservation for Harijans.( children of God- not daltis segregating people ) . MInistry of Social Welfare was conceived in his discussion from this basti--A Historical place indeed . But just as its old inhabitants were ignored by the system and the Bapu Niwas is also not mentored by the system or govnt, but the descendants of teh Gandhi's informal school. Many including Sant Krishan Vidharthi who manages teh Valmiki Mandir complex keeps the small room used by Gandhiji intact.NO tourists, no govnt funds, but Vidhyarthi whose father and uncles were taught by Gandhi in this informal school of Gandhi runs to that room after his usual pooja at the Valmiki Mandir. Gandhiji said my life is my message and Valmiki basti and the room Gandhi stayed at Mandir Marg at Lutyens Delhi, stands as a bold testimony to Gandhi and our own indifference to the great social and political experiments which our forefathers undertook while gaining self rule.( Thank you friends at National Institute of Naturopathy -Pune)
