BJP councillors development works being stalled is highly condemnable: Tikshan Sood
Hoshiarpur/ Daljeet Ajnoha/May 16
Former cabinet minister and senior BJP leader Tikshan Sood has strongly condemned what he called discriminatory practices by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in allotting development works. Addressing the media, Sood said it has been more than four years since the government came to power, yet not a single rupee has been released for development projects in Hoshiarpur Municipal Corporation. The lanes and roads of the city are in a deplorable condition and accidents are taking place at several locations, he said.
Sood said many localities remain shrouded in darkness at night because of missing streetlights. He accused the municipal administration of staging openings of projects funded by citizens hard-earned tax money in a way that makes it appear as if local MLAs had procured all the funds from the state government.
A delegation of BJP councillors Narinder Kaur, Gurpreet Kaur, Geetika Arora and Surinder Bhatti met Sood and alleged that councillors from the BJP are being deliberately sidelined and their development works are being blocked. Ward No. 16 councillor Narinder Kaur said projects worth nearly Rs 100 crore for her underdeveloped ward had been approved and work orders issued, but the work has been stopped by verbal directions from the government to embarrass her during elections.
She added that contractors, under pressure from the government, have expressed their inability and repeatedly delayed the works, causing severe hardship to residents. Several other BJP councillors echoed similar complaints, saying work on pothole repair, roads and streetlights in their wards has also stalled.
With summer setting in, power cuts have affected water supply, leaving residents short of drinking water, they said. Accumulated garbage poses a risk of disease outbreaks, yet the government appears indifferent, the councillors charged.
Sood warned that it is the governments responsibility to ensure civic amenities for city residents and it cannot shirk this duty. He said that once the government changes, action will be taken against officials and contractors who have been misusing their positions.
BJP leaders Sanju Arora, Ashok Kumar (former councillor), Paras, Ishan Mehra and Pritpal Singh were present on the occasion.
