Under the health awareness programme of BBMB and on the directions of Chief Engineer Rakesh Gupta, Senior Doctor at BBMB Hospital Talwara, Dr. Sukhdev Singh Sandhu, shared important information regarding the causes, prevention and treatment of high blood pressure (hypertension) on the occasion of World Hypertension Day (May 17).

Dr. Sandhu stated that hypertension is often referred to as a Silent Killer because in many cases its symptoms are not clearly visible, yet it can lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and other complications. He said that stressful lifestyle, excessive salt intake, smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, lack of exercise and unhealthy eating habits are among the major causes of hypertension.

Dr. Sandhu further informed that the theme of this years World Hypertension Day is Controlling Hypertension Together!, aimed at spreading awareness about high blood pressure, encouraging regular monitoring and promoting collective efforts to control the disease. He added that nearly 1.3 billion people worldwide are suffering from hypertension, but many remain unaware of their condition. Therefore, regular blood pressure check-ups and health awareness are extremely important.

He advised people to undergo regular blood pressure monitoring, engage in daily physical exercise, consume green vegetables and balanced diets, and try to stay away from stress in order to prevent hypertension. He also emphasized reducing the intake of salt and fatty foods, especially after the age of 40.

Dr. Sandhu said that people suffering from high blood pressure should take medicines regularly as advised by doctors and continuously monitor their blood pressure. He added that timely diagnosis and proper treatment can help keep hypertension under control.

On this occasion, Dr. Sandhu also appealed to the public to remain health conscious and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
