Birla Industrial&Technological Museum, Kolkata celebrates International Day of Light

The International Day Of Light is being celebrated with its usual pomp and grandeur at Birla Industrial & Technological Museum, Kolkata between May 15-17 2026.The International Day of Light (officially celebrated on May 16) is a global UNESCO initiative that highlights the pivotal role of light in science, culture, art, education, and sustainable development. It commemorates the anniversary of physicist Theodore Maimans first successful laser operation in 1960. It celebrates not just the scientific aspects of optics, but how light shapes modern communications (fiber optics), medicine (lasers, diagnostic imaging), and energy.
The inaugural presentation at Birla Industrial & Technological Museum auditorium,namely DeLight , Light-Science-Action given by Mr Tarun Kumar Das, Head , Education Section, BITM had audiences captivated and mesmerized. The highly educative and informative performance punched with a bit of humour got huge appreciation from spectators, students and media. Mr Das ,not only ,through his speech, but also through practical demonstrations explained the Fundamental Characteristics of Light ie Speed, Rectilinear Propagation, Wave-Particle Duality, Properties of Wave Behavior like Wavelength and Frequency, Reflection, Refraction, Diffraction: Interference Polarization & Light and Matter Interactions eg Transmission,Absorption ,Dispersion
The event due to its innovative, creative and educative approach is surely a must see experience for all.
