This year, a rare coincidence falls on Shani Jayanti, as it coincides with Shanichari Amavasya. Internationally renowned vastu expert and author Dr. Bhupendra Vastu Shastri says that planting a Shami (Prosopis) sapling on this occasion will prove especially auspicious. While trees and plants are generally revered as natures pride, planting particular species on special days is believed to bring added benefits.
To appease Shani, the deity who presides over the west, or to remove vastu defects originating from the west of a house, Dr. Bhupendra advises planting a Shami sapling at home. He recommends placing the pot on a clean spot on the roof between the bearings of 255 and 285. The pot should be slate- or cement-coloured, and it must not be placed near toilets, filth, garbage or heavy objects.
According to Dr. Bhupendra, lighting a mustard-oil lamp beside the Shami plant every Saturday can alleviate Shani afflictions and western vastu defects. He also cautions that while performing rituals around the Shami plant, one must ensure that their shadow does not fall directly on the plant.
