Supreme Court Directs Rajasthan to Implement Rajasthani Language in Schools

Rajasthan: The Supreme Court of India has directed the Rajasthan government to implement Rajasthani language as a subject in both government and private schools. This historic decision has been welcomed by millions of Rajasthani speakers as a recognition of their cultural identity. The Court emphasized that children should receive education in their mother tongue, which is not only a means of communication but also a foundation for values, culture, and identity.

The three-member bench comprising Vikram Nath, Sandeep Mehta, and Vijay Bishnoi stated that, according to the Constitution and the National Education Policy 2020, mother tongue education is essential for children’s mental development and confidence. The Court has instructed the Rajasthan government to submit a compliance report by September 30. Advocates of the petition highlighted that despite millions speaking Rajasthani, the language lacks adequate representation in school curricula and competitive exams like REET. Experts believe that systematic inclusion of Rajasthani in education will strengthen the state’s cultural heritage and ensure its transmission to future generations.
