Can global knowledge truly become global if large parts of the world remain underrepresented in shaping it?
This fundamental question posed by Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Honble Union Minister of Education, set the tone for the inaugural day of the Global Colloquium 2026: Building Bridges in Social Sciences, held on 11 May 2026 at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences.
As TISS celebrates its 90-year journey, Shri Pradhan highlighted the institutes legacy from its pre-independence origins envisioned by the Tata Group to its current role as a living classroom in the cosmopolitan melting pot of Mumbai. He commended TISS for translating values of social responsibility into lived practice, standing at the forefront during crises ranging from the Odisha super cyclone crisis to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Drawing upon Indias civilisational strength, the Minister illustrated the concept of Samvad (dialogue) through the lens of the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita. He emphasised that while material science drives tangible progress, it is social science that provides the moral compass and ethical direction required to navigate challenges such as Artificial Intelligence and global conflicts.
Social science ultimately shapes society more profoundly than material science. It is an intangible heritage that defines the moral direction of humanity.
Shri Pradhan also lauded Indias governance model of Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, noting that the countrys democratic experience and digital transformation offer valuable case studies for the Global South.
During the event, the Honble Minister officially released two key publications: the Global Insights Newsletter and the Global Engagement Review Report.
The session was enriched by diverse perspectives from distinguished dignitaries. It began with a welcome address by Prof. Madhushree Sekher (Chairperson, Office for International Affairs, TISS), followed by a contextual overview on Indias new social science research optics by Prof. Badri Narayan Tiwari (Vice-Chancellor, TISS). Dr. Surjit Bhalla (Former Member, Prime Ministers Economic Advisory Council) delivered the keynote address, while Prof. Siri Hettige (Professor Emeritus, University of Colombo) offered a special guest talk reflecting on civilisational challenges.
The gathering also heard addresses from Dr. Vineet Joshi (Secretary, Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education) and Prof. D.P. Singh (Chancellor, TISS).
The proceedings concluded with meaningful remarks by Dr. Narendra Mishra (Officiating Registrar), encapsulating the spirit of the days deliberations.
We extend our deepest gratitude to Shri Dharmendra Pradhan and all dignitaries for their presence. We look forward to three days of collaborative dialogue.
