Report: Allegations of FIR Refusal and Police Misconduct in Assault and Snatching Case

A serious allegation of police negligence and discriminatory treatment has emerged following an incident that reportedly took place on 18 April 2026 in the Shalimar area of Howrah. According to the victim, a physical assault and snatching incident occurred in broad daylight in front of CCTV cameras near 5/6 Foreshore Road. The victim claims that ornaments worth approximately 4.5 lakh, including valuable jewellery, along with 15,000 cash, were forcibly snatched during the attack.
The victim further stated that after the incident, he visited the police station with medical prescriptions and treatment documents related to the assault injuries. However, instead of immediately registering an FIR, the complainant alleges that he was made to wait inside the police station for nearly six hours.
Serious allegations have also been raised against police officer Samir Bhattacharya. The complainant alleges that despite the presence of medical evidence and CCTV footage, no FIR was registered. The victim further claims that he faced threats and discriminatory behaviour as a non-Bengali Hindu individual. According to the allegations, the accused persons were allegedly politically connected and involved in illegal activities, including drug peddling and unlawful alcohol sales.
The complainant has accused the police of failing to perform their duty impartially, stating that police officers, as public servants, are expected to provide equal justice and protection without discrimination based on religion, language, political affiliation, or community background.
The incident has raised concerns regarding accountability, fairness in policing, and the handling of serious criminal complaints involving assault and snatching. The victim is seeking justice and demanding proper investigation into both the original crime and the alleged refusal to register the FIR despite available evidence.Moving forward the victim has raised the complaint in human rights comission
