Srinagar, May 9: The district administration of Bandipora has banned the sale of tobacco products near schools and educational institutions, directing strict implementation of the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act (COTPA) and the Juvenile Justice Act.
According to a public notice issued by the office of the District Magistrate Bandipora, sale of tobacco products to persons below 18 years of age and within a radius of 100 yards of educational institutions has been strictly prohibited.
The administration has directed all retailers, vendors, shopkeepers, and distributors to install statutory warning boards within 15 days and verify the age of buyers through valid government-issued photo identity cards before selling tobacco products.
Authorities also ordered the immediate discontinuation of employment of minors in any activity related to tobacco trade.
The notice further stated that tobacco products cannot be sold within 100 yards of schools and educational institutions, and all shopkeepers must prominently display warning messages at their establishments.
Referring to Section 77 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, the administration warned that giving or selling tobacco products to children is a punishable offence carrying rigorous imprisonment up to seven years along with a fine up to 1 lakh.
The administration also stated that police shall register an FIR if a child is found under the influence of or in possession of tobacco products meant for sale.
Officials warned that strict legal action will be taken against violators under the provisions of COTPA, 2003, and the Juvenile Justice Act, 2015.
