Suvendu Adhikari Took The Oath As The New Chief Minister Of West Bengal

Kolkata, May 9, AIMA Media Update News: A new BJP government has assumed office in West Bengal. Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in today, Saturday, as the 9th Chief Minister of West Bengal. Governor R.N. Ravi administered the oath of office to him during a ceremony held at the Brigade Ground in Kolkata. Suvendu Adhikari has become the first person since 1971 to assume the office of Chief Minister from a district outside of Kolkata. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Ram Mohan Naidu, and several other Union Ministers attended the event. Andhra Pradesh CM Chandrababu Naidu, UP CM Yogi Adityanath, Chief Ministers of several other NDA-ruled states, BJP President Nitin Nabin, and others also participated. Suvendu Adhikari, once a close confidant of TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee, has now defeated her to take over the reins as Chief Minister.

Suvendu Adhikari is 55 years old. He holds a strong influence over the rural districts of West Bengal. The last time a Chief Minister from a rural region of Bengal assumed office was in 1971, when Ajoy Mukherjee became CM. He served in that capacity as a Congress Chief Minister. Ajoy Mukherjee had become CM in 1969, during the split of the party under the leadership of Indira Gandhi. Suvendu Adhikari's father previously served as a Union Minister; his name is Sisir Adhikari. Suvendu began his career in the Congress party's student wing. During a period when the Left Front held dominance in Bengal, Suvendu played a pivotal role in the Chhatra Parishad. Subsequently, he joined the Trinamool Congress, led by Mamata Banerjee. Prior to joining the BJP, he was a highly trusted confidant of 'Didi.' Later, however, he emerged as a formidable rival to Mamata Banerjee. In the recently concluded Assembly elections, the BJP secured victory in 207 seats and formed the government. Notably, Suvendu defeated 'Didi' in the two instances where he contested against her.
