Punjab Village Innovates Funeral Tradition to Support Bereaved Family

Punjab: A village in Punjab has created a new tradition during funeral rites that made history by providing financial support to a grieving family. When the funeral of a poor man, who was the sole breadwinner of his household, reached the cemetery and the rows were arranged, Imam Sahib addressed the attendees with a heartfelt announcement. The deceased was the only provider for his family, which included a widow and three young children. During the mourning period, the family had no source of income, so a cloth was spread at the cemetery gate, inviting attendees to contribute money according to their ability for the welfare of the orphaned children without any show of generosity.

After the burial, the collected amount exceeded one lakh rupees, comprising contributions ranging from ten to a hundred rupees from various donors. This collective compassion ensured several months’ expenses for the children, demonstrating that condolences are not merely raising hands in prayer but providing practical support during times of hardship. The announcement encourages religious scholars to adopt this practice universally, making such contributions a form of ongoing charity (Sadaqah Jariyah) to ease financial burdens on families who lose their sole earning member.
