Govt. of India Launches "Vermi Wash" to Revolutionize Organic Farming and Boost Soil Health

NEW DELHI, May 8, 2026 In a major push toward sustainable agriculture, the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare (DA&FW) has officially launched its newest organic initiative: Vermi Wash. Positioned as a "Natural Way to Feed Your Farm," this bio-liquid fertilizer is designed to reduce dependence on chemical inputs while significantly improving crop yields and soil resilience.
What is Vermi Wash?
Vermi Wash is a nutrient-rich liquid extract collected from vermicompost units. It contains a potent blend of amino acids, vitamins, enzymes, and growth hormones (like cytokinins and auxins), along with beneficial microorganisms. Unlike solid fertilizers, Vermi Wash acts as both a plant tonic and a mild biopesticide, helping crops resist pests and diseases like wheat rust and various fungal infections.
How to Use Vermi Wash: Quick Guide for Farmers
To ensure maximum efficacy, the Department has released specific application guidelines:
Precise Dilution: Mix 100 ml of Vermi Wash per 1 litre of water. Using the correct ratio ensures the plants receive a balanced concentration of nutrients without risk of burn.
Flexible Application: It can be applied as a foliar spray directly onto leaves for rapid absorption or integrated into drip irrigation systems to reach the root zone efficiently.
Optimal Timing: For best results, apply during the early morning or late evening. This avoids rapid evaporation and ensures the plant's stomata are open for nutrient uptake.
Consistency: A frequency of once every 1015 days is recommended to maintain steady growth and soil health.
Digital Integration: BharatVistaar and AI Support
The launch is backed by the governments recently deployed BharatVistaar platforman AI-powered "Digital Public Infrastructure" for farmers.
Scan to Buy: The product features a QR code on the packaging, allowing farmers to purchase refills or related organic inputs instantly via their smartphones.
AI Assistance: Farmers can download the BharatVistaar App or call the AI-powered helpline at 155261 for real-time, voice-based advice in multiple local languages.
Kisan Call Center (KCC): For direct human expertise, the toll-free number 1800-180-1551 remains active from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM, connecting farmers with agricultural scientists and specialists.
A Greener Future
"Vermi Wash is not just a fertilizer; it is a step toward restoring the natural equilibrium of our soil," said a senior official from the Ministry. By providing a cost-effective, eco-friendly alternative to synthetic chemicals, the initiative aims to increase the profitability of small-scale farmers while ensuring safer, organic produce for consumers nationwide.
Farmers are encouraged to transition to these organic methods to take advantage of the long-term benefits of soil carbon sequestration and climate-resilient farming.
