Midnight Reality Check: IPS Officer Exposes Womens Safety Concerns on Hyderabad Streets
In a bold and eye-opening field exercise, Sumathi IPS stood alone at a bus stop in Dilsukhnagar past midnight to understand what women actually face on city streets after dark.
Between 12:30 AM and 3:30 AM, nearly 40 men approached hermany allegedly under the influence of alcohol or drgs. During this time, she encountered inappropriate remarks, repeated advances, and vlg*r offers. Some of those involved were reportedly students and working professionals, highlighting a deeper social concern.
Rather than focusing only on punishment, the officer ensured that all individuals were identified, c**nselled, and warned about their behaviour towards women. The aim was not just enforcement, but awareness and correction.
This was not her first such initiative. Nearly 25 years ago, as a young DSP near Kazipet Railway Station, she had carried out a similar ground-level exercise to assess womens safety.
Even after reaching a senior position, she chose to step into real situations instead of staying within office limitsshowing strong commitment to public safety and policing.
While her dedication deserves recognition, the findings reflect an uncomfortable truth. For many women, stepping out alone at night is still not safe enough. The incident highlights the urgent need for stronger awareness, better behaviour, and collective responsibility in society.
