World Press Freedom Day Observed on May 3, 2026

World : May 3rd has been designated as World Press Freedom Day since 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly following a recommendation by the UNESCO General Conference. The date commemorates the Windhoek Declaration, drafted by African media representatives in Namibia, which outlines key principles of press freedom.

This day underscores the fundamental right to freedom of expression as outlined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It serves to remind governments of the importance of respecting this freedom, to celebrate press freedom principles, evaluate global press freedom status, defend media independence, and honor journalists who have died in the line of duty. Ambassador Luis Suárez, PhD, from the National College of Journalists of the Republic of Cuba (in Exile)—CNP, extended his congratulations to journalists worldwide.
