World Press Freedom Day Observed on May 3, 2026

World Press Freedom Day, observed on May 3rd, was proclaimed in 1993 by the United Nations General Assembly following a UNESCO recommendation. The date marks the anniversary of the Windhoek Declaration, where African media representatives drafted principles of press freedom during a UNESCO seminar in Namibia's capital.

According to Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, freedom of expression is a fundamental right. This day serves to remind governments to respect this freedom, raise awareness about press freedom issues, celebrate journalistic principles, and honor journalists who have died in the line of duty. Ambassador Luis Suárez, PhD, of the National College of Journalists of the Republic of Cuba (in Exile)—CNP, extended his congratulations to journalists worldwide.
