Odisha Unveils TUW Policy 2026, Targets 50% Wastewater Reuse by 2036

Bhubaneswar: In a major push toward sustainable water management and circular economy practices, the state of Odisha has officially notified its Treated Used Water (TUW) Policy, 2026. The policy sets ambitious targets aimed at transforming wastewater into a valuable resource, reducing dependence on freshwater, and addressing growing urban water stress.
Under the new framework, Odisha plans to achieve 100% treatment of used water across all Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) by 2030. In addition, the policy outlines a phased increase in reuse—starting with 20% reuse by 2030, scaling up to an impressive 50% by 2036.
The initiative emphasizes the productive use of treated wastewater across multiple sectors, including municipal services, industries, and agriculture. By promoting reuse, the government aims to significantly cut down freshwater consumption, ensuring long-term water security for both urban and rural populations.
Officials say the TUW Policy is aligned with global sustainability goals and reflects Odisha’s commitment to innovative water governance. The policy is expected to encourage infrastructure development, investment in advanced treatment technologies, and public-private partnerships in the water sector.
Experts have welcomed the move, noting that effective implementation could position Odisha as a leader in wastewater recycling in India. With rapid urbanization putting pressure on natural water sources, the policy comes at a critical time, offering a structured roadmap to manage water resources more efficiently.
The government is also expected to roll out awareness campaigns and regulatory mechanisms to ensure compliance and maximize the adoption of treated water across industries and local bodies.
By turning wastewater into a resource, Odisha’s TUW Policy marks a significant step toward a more resilient and sustainable future.
