Safety Hazards and Infrastructure Failures Subhadra Shakti Mela in Jharsuguda; Heavy Vehicle Found Inside SHG Stall
JHARSUGUDA, ODISHA – Serious concerns have been raised regarding the management and safety standards of the district-level Subhadra Shakti Mela in Jharsuguda. While the event is designed to empower local Self-Help Groups (SHGs) under the state's flagship Mission Shakti department, recent visuals from the ground depict a scene of administrative negligence and hazardous conditions.
Major Safety Breach
In a shocking lapse of protocol, a heavy transport truck was found parked directly inside a vendor stall designated for SHG products. The presence of the vehicle within the pedestrian and vending zone poses a severe physical risk to participants and visitors alike.
Witnesses at the scene expressed disbelief at how a vehicle of that size was permitted to enter and remain in a confined commercial space. "This is a recipe for disaster," noted one visitor. "The Mela is supposed to be a safe space for women entrepreneurs, not a parking lot for heavy machinery."
Substandard Infrastructure
Beyond the safety risks, the quality of the stalls provided to the SHGs has come under intense scrutiny. Visual evidence shows:
Structural Instability: Flimsy stall frames and poorly secured partitions.
Tattered Materials: Torn fabric and inadequate roofing that offer little protection for the hand-crafted goods and organic products on display.
Unfinished Layouts: Several areas appear haphazardly assembled, undermining the professional image of the entrepreneurs representing Jharsuguda’s Mission Shakti groups.
Call for Accountability
The incident has sparked outrage on social media, with local residents and participants tagging the Collector and District Magistrate of Jharsuguda, the Mission Shakti Department, and the Government of Odisha.
There is a growing demand for an immediate inspection of the premises. Critics argue that such mismanagement not only endangers public safety but also devalues the hard work of the women who rely on these exhibitions to sustain their livelihoods.
