West Bengal Records Historic Voter Turnout, Highest Since Independence

In a remarkable display of democratic participation, Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that West Bengal has recorded its highest-ever voter turnout since Independence in the ongoing 2026 Legislative Assembly elections.

According to an official press note released from Nirvachan Sadan, New Delhi, polling for Phase-II concluded with an impressive 91.66% voter turnout, while Phase-I had already set a strong precedent with 93.19% participation. The combined voter turnout across both phases stands at 92.47%, surpassing the previous record of 84.72% recorded in 2011.

Women Lead the Democratic Surge
One of the most notable highlights of this election has been the higher participation of women voters. Data released by the ECI shows:

Phase I: Male – 92.34%, Female – 94.10%

Phase II: Male – 91.07%, Female – 92.28%

Overall (Phase I & II): Male – 91.74%, Female – 93.24%

This consistent trend reflects growing political awareness and engagement among women voters across the state.

Strong Administrative Measures Ensure Smooth Polling
Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners S. S. Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, closely monitored the polling process through 100% live webcasting of polling stations, ensuring transparency and efficiency.

The elections also saw the implementation of several voter-friendly initiatives, including improved voter slips, mobile deposit facilities, and better accessibility for Persons with Disabilities (PwD), with provisions such as wheelchairs and transport assistance.

Massive Electoral Participation
Across both phases, the scale of participation was significant:

Total Electorate: Over 6.81 crore

Polling Stations: 85,377

Polling Staff Deployed: Over 4.26 lakh

Candidates: 2,926

Officials noted that polling data is provisional and does not yet include service voters and postal ballots. Final figures will be released later via the ECINET system.

A Democratic Milestone
The unprecedented turnout in West Bengal reflects not only administrative efficiency but also a deep-rooted commitment of citizens towards the democratic process. As the state moves towards the next stages of the election, the high participation is being hailed as a strong indicator of vibrant electoral engagement.
