AMU’s Arabic Department Hosts Lecture on Arabic, Urdu and Persian Literary Heritage

Aligarh, April 23: The Department of Arabic, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), organised a joint academic session at its conference hall under the aegis of the BA and MA Arabic students’ association Al-Nadi Al-Arabi and the research scholars’ forum Muntada al-Bahitheen.

The event featured Prof. Qazi Jamal Husain, former faculty member of the Department of Urdu, AMU, and a noted critic, researcher and aesthetician, as the chief guest.

Prof. Mohammad Faizan Beg, Chairperson of the Department of Arabic, welcomed the guest and highlighted the long-standing history and contributions of the department, noting its deep association with the university since its inception.

In his lecture, Prof. Qazi Jamal Husain urged students to cultivate refined literary taste to better appreciate classical works, calling it the true purpose of literary study. Drawing examples from pre-Islamic and classical Arabic poetry, he explained various dimensions of literary aesthetics. He also described Arabic as one of the oldest and most influential languages, emphasising the need to preserve and study its rich literary heritage.

Encouraging a comparative approach, he advised students to engage with Urdu and Persian literature as well. He cited verses from poets such as Mir, Ghalib, Jigar, Rumi, Saadi and Amrul Qais, explaining their meanings and noting how words can evolve or lose meaning over time.

Khalid Saifullah, Secretary of Al-Nadi Al-Arabi, conducted the proceedings, while Mohammad Shahid, President of Muntada al-Bahitheen, outlined the objectives of the event. The session concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Ahsanullah Khan.
