A sudden blaze along the Bist Doab Canal and in fields of nearby villages Vika Pur, Is Pur and Nagdi Pur destroyed nine fields of wheat and two-and-a-half fields of paddy, reports said.
Farmer Sanjeev Kumar informed the Kot Fatuhi police about the fire, who promptly alerted the Garhshankar fire brigade. The team arrived at the scene within half an hour, joined by Mahilpur police station SHO Inspector Ramandeep Kaur and her team. After about one-and-a-half hours of intense efforts, they brought the flames under control.
Preliminary information suggests the fire started from sparks from overhead electricity wires. Affected farmers include Amarjeet Singh, son of Darshan Singh, whose nine wheat fields were gutted; Pradeep Singh, son of Joga Singh, who lost two-and-a-half paddy fields; and Jagir Singh, whose two fields were also damaged.
Local farmers helped douse the fire using their tractors and demanded a fire station be established at Kot Fatuhi to prevent future delays
