#AMU || Mourns the Passing of Distinguished Alumna and Veteran Leader Mohsina Kidwai

AMU has expressed deep sorrow over the demise of Mohsina Kidwai, a distinguished alumna of Women’s College, AMU, and a veteran parliamentarian who served the nation with distinction over several decades.

Born in Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, Mohsina Kidwai (1932–2026) rose from the classrooms of AMU to occupy prominent positions in public life, serving as a Union Minister under Prime Ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, and holding several key portfolios including Health, Rural Development, Urban Development and Transport. She was also a member of both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, and held important organisational roles in the Indian National Congress.

AMU Vice Chancellor Prof Naima Khatoon paid rich tributes to her, describing her as a trailblazer whose life reflected dedication to public service, inclusive development and women’s empowerment.

Prof. Khatoon said that Mohsina Kidwai always remained deeply connected with AMU and cherished her association with the university. She visited the campus many times and interacted with students of Women’s College, sharing her experiences and encouraging young women to pursue leadership roles with confidence and integrity. She recalled that Kidwai had graced the Sir Syed Day celebrations in 2012 as the Chief Guest, where she inspired students to adopt rational and scientific thinking and to contribute meaningfully to society.

Prof. Khatoon noted that Kidwai often spoke fondly of her student days at AMU and credited the institution for shaping her personality and values. Her association with AMU also included serving as a member of the University Court, reflecting her continued engagement with her alma mater.

Pro Vice Chancellor Mohammad Mohsin Khan also expressed grief over her demise and said that she was a respected national leader whose contributions to governance and social welfare will be remembered for generations. He noted that her life remains a source of inspiration for students, particularly women aspiring to excel in public life.

The university community conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and prayed for the highest place for her in Jannah.
