In order to ensure timely communication during emergency situations involving the release of excess water from the Pong dam into the Beas River, residents living along the riverbanks will now receive immediate alerts. For this purpose, the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) has installed an advanced Early Warning System (EWS) along the Beas River. The system was inaugurated online by BBMB Chairman, Engineer Manoj Tripathi.
Under this initiative, six Early Warning System units have been installed. On this occasion, Chief Engineer of Beas Dam Rakesh Gupta, Deputy Chief Engineer Vimal Kumar Meena, Superintending Engineer Manveen Chaudhary, Executive Engineer Vinay Kumar, and SDO Parminder Singh were present at the site.
Chairman Manoj Tripathi stated that earlier, whenever water had to be released from Pong Dam during emergency situations, BBMB teams along with the local administration had to visit villages and alert residents using loudspeakers. Six public address systems were also in place; however, it took time for the information to reach people, increasing the risk of potential accidents. With the installation of this new Early Warning System, alerts will now be transmitted instantly to the public.
He further emphasized that BBMB remains committed to providing better services to the people and that this project has been implemented in the larger public interest.
Chief Engineer Beas Dam, Rakesh Gupta informed that six Early Warning System units have been installed over a stretch of approximately 50 kilometers, from the 52 Gate Barrage to Mirthal. These systems have been installed at Pekhan, Sansarpur Terrace, the right side of Shah Barrage, Riali (Fatehpur), Bela Sariyana (Mukerian), Parol (Indora), and near Arni University, Indora.
He added that these warning systems have been strategically placed near populated areas. Whenever water is to be released from the dam, alerts will be issued in advance through these systems, enabling people to move away from the riverbed and ensure their safety.
