Local Legend ‘Dadaang Maharaj’ Continues to Inspire Devotion in Murshidabad

Murshidabad, West Bengal:
A unique tale of faith and folklore continues to thrive in the Kandi region of Murshidabad district, where a wandering man, Subal Das (Sutradhar), fondly remembered as Dadaang Maharaj, is still worshipped as a local deity.

Born in Olapara of Madhunia village under Kandi police station, Dadaang Maharaj was known for his simple lifestyle and unusual habits. Clad mostly in a plain white sleeveless vest, he lived as a wanderer and often sought food from local shops.

Over time, a belief began to take root among shopkeepers. Many claimed that whenever Dadaang Maharaj ate at their establishments, their business saw a sudden and significant increase. What began as observation soon turned into deep faith. Local traders started inviting him with reverence, offering him food and even seating him in places traditionally reserved for deities.

Following his passing, a samadhi temple was established in his memory at Satir Ghat, situated along the banks of the Kana Mayurakshi River in Ward No. 14 of Chatinakandi. The site has since become a prominent place of worship and local pilgrimage.

Every year, at the beginning of the Agrahayan month, the area witnesses a grand religious and cultural festival. The event features a large fair and attracts devotees from various surrounding regions, creating a vibrant atmosphere of devotion and celebration.

Even today, Dadaang Maharaj holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Kandi. Regarded as a living legend and folk deity, his presence is felt across households, where his photographs are commonly worshipped with deep faith.

Devotees continue to offer prayers with reverence, keeping alive the legacy of a man whose life has transcended into belief and tradition.
