एडवर्ड जेम्स कॉर्बेट, जिन्हें दुनिया जिम कॉर्बेट के नाम से जानती है, का जन्म 25 जुलाई 1875 को नैनीताल में हुआ था। वे क्रिस्टोफर और मैरी जेन कॉर्बेट के आठवें बच्चे थे। जिम नैनीताल में पले-बढ़े और यहीं से अपनी शिक्षा प्राप्त की, जबकि सर्दियाँ वे कालाढुंगी में बिताते थे। चूंकि ये दोनों स्थान प्राकृतिक सुंदरता से भरपूर थे, इसलिए जिम प्रकृति के प्रति गहरी रुचि रखने वाले एक अद्भुत प्रकृतिवादी बन गए।
माध्यमिक शिक्षा पूरी करने के बाद जिम ने रेलवे और फिर सेना में सेवा की। अंततः वे नैनीताल और कालाढुंगी लौट आए, यह काल उनके लेखन में स्पष्ट रूप से झलकता है। एक महान शिकारी, प्रकृतिवादी और लेखक होने के साथ-साथ, जिम सबसे बढ़कर एक सरल और उदार व्यक्ति थे।
जिम ने कभी शादी नहीं की और अपना अधिकांश जीवन मैगी के साथ बिताया। स्वतंत्रता के बाद, जिम और उनकी बहन मैगी ने 1947 में केन्या में बसने का फैसला किया। जिम की अधिकांश पुस्तकें केन्या में ही प्रकाशित हुईं और यहीं 1955 में उनका निधन हो गया।
आज जिम कॉर्बेट वन्यजीव और प्रकृति संरक्षण के पर्याय के रूप में एक प्रतीक बन गए हैं।

An Introduction
Edward James Corbett, known to the world as Jim Corbett was born on 25th July 1875 in Nanital. He was the eighth child of Christopher and Mary Jane Corbett. Jim grew up in Nanital and received his education here, while winters were spent in Kaladhungi. Since both these places were richly endowed with wilderness, Jim became a wonderful naturalist with a keen love for the wild.
After completing his secondary education Jim served in the Railways and then in the Army. He eventually returned to Nainital and Kaladhungi, a period that dominates his writings. A great hunter, naturalist and author that he was, Jim was above all a simple and generous person.
Jim never married and spent much of his life with Maggie. After Independence Jim and his sister Maggie decided to migrate to Kenya in 1947. Most of Jim's books were published while in Kenya and this is where he died in 1955.
Jim Corbett today has become an icon synonymous with wildlife and nature conservation.
