Ameena Begum Returns Home After Legal Battle in UAE; Emotional Reunion at RGIA Hyderabad
Hyderabad, March — In a significant and emotional development, Ameena Begum, a resident of Kishenbagh, Hyderabad, who was arrested at Dubai Airport on 18th May 2025 and later sentenced to 25 years imprisonment in a drug-related case, has finally returned to Hyderabad after a prolonged legal battle in the UAE.
Ameena Begum had earlier filed her first appeal before a three-member bench in Dubai, which was rejected, upholding the lower court’s judgment. Her legal counsel had argued that she was innocent and had unknowingly carried a bag containing contraband, after being misled by an agent who promised her a job abroad. Despite highlighting her vulnerable condition — including abandonment by her husband, responsibility of a minor son and aged parents, and her illness (Tuberculosis) — the appeal was dismissed.
Following the setback, efforts were initiated to pursue further legal remedies, including a second appeal in the Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi and filing of a mercy petition. Amjed Ullah Khan (Spokesman), Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT) actively coordinated with the legal team and extended full support, including raising funds for legal expenses amounting to 25,000 Dirhams with the help of generous donors.
After sustained efforts, Ameena Begum was finally released and arrived at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, where she was received by Amjed Ullah Khan.
The moment turned deeply emotional as Ameena Begum, upon seeing her minor son and mother at the airport, broke down in tears and embraced her son after months of separation.
Mohammed Iftekaruddin, Legal Consultant from Mahbubnagar & Hyderabad, currently running a legal firm in Dubai, who played a crucial role in coordinating legal assistance and hiring an advocate in Dubai, was also present at the airport during her arrival.
Speaking on the occasion, Ameena Begum expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Amjed Ullah Khan for tirelessly fighting her legal battle and to all those who contributed financially to support her case during her difficult time.
Amjed Ullah Khan thanked all donors and well-wishers who extended support and reiterated his commitment to stand by distressed individuals facing legal challenges abroad.
He also stated that such cases highlight the urgent need for awareness among job seekers to avoid falling prey to fraudulent agents and emphasized the importance of government-level intervention in humanitarian cases involving Indian citizens overseas.
