Shri Bala Bangaramma Temple: The Historical Shaktipeetha of the Pallaki Bhovi Community

Shri Bala Bangaramma Temple: The Historical Shaktipeetha of the Pallaki Bhovi Community
Kalaburagi: The Shri Bala Bangaramma Temple is a unique and historical shrine of the Pallaki Bhovi community, located in the heart of Kalaburagi city.
Shri Bala Bangaramma Devi:
The Goddess is the patron deity (Kuladevi) of the Pallaki Bhovi community and is believed to be an incarnation of Shri Durga Devi. It is a deep-rooted belief among devotees that whenever unrighteousness increased in society or devotees faced great distress, the Goddess incarnated in the form of a young girl (Bala) to protect them. She is the 'Mother' who stands by her devotees in times of trouble.
Temple Background:
Located in the market area of central Kalaburagi near Saraf Bazaar, this temple is approximately 300 years old. Surrounded by shops and houses, the temple underwent a significant renovation about 40 years ago. This important task was carried out under the leadership of the late Ashok Kumar Manokar, an elder of the community and former State President. Community organizations continue to work for the temple's development and the convenience of devotees.
Center of Social Justice:
The Shri Bala Bangaramma Temple is not just a religious center but also the 'Social Court' of the Bhovi community. If any internal disputes or family conflicts arise within the community, it is a tradition to hold a 'Panchayati' (meeting) in the presence of community elders at the Goddess's shrine to seek justice. The entire community respects the decisions made during these meetings, keeping the Goddess as a witness.
The Idols of the Goddess:
There are four main idols in the temple:
The first two are stone (Pashana) idols of Shri Bangaramma Devi.
The third is the main deity, 'Shri Bala Bangaramma', which is uniquely crafted from Banni tree wood every three years.
The fourth is a tall stone idol of Shri Bala Bangaramma Devi.
The premises also house a small shrine for older idols and stone carvings of Naga Devatas (Serpent Gods).
Festivals and Traditions:
Special prayers are offered every Tuesday and Friday. While Navratri is celebrated simply, the month of Ashadha holds immense significance. During this time, offerings and sacrifices are made to the Goddess. Devotees pray for happiness, prosperity, and health at the onset of the monsoon. A procession featuring baskets of offerings (Naivedya) is taken through the city, known as the 'Butti Jatre'. An annual fair (Jatre) is held in the month of Chaitra, with a grand special fair occurring every three years. This year's fair will be held on March 27.
Historical Context:
Elders state that after the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire, this community—known for carrying royal palanquins (Pallaki) and showing bravery on the battlefield—migrated to the Kalaburagi region. They initially built a small shrine to worship the Goddess. According to Puranic references, she is called 'Shri Bala Bangaramma' as the daughter of Daksha Prajapati who saved the community in the form of a young girl.
Harmony Between Vishwakarma and Bhovi Communities:
The temple stands as a symbol of harmony. The wooden idol of the Goddess is crafted by the Vishwakarma Badiger family. Currently, 72-year-old Shri Kalyani Chintamani Badiger has been performing this service for 40 years. Once the idol is ready, it is ceremoniously handed over to the elders of the Pallaki Bhovi community. It is then brought to the temple with sacred water from the 'Gangasthala', accompanied by the sounds of Dollu-Tamatte drums and a procession of women carrying Kumbhas (sacred pots). Additionally, members of the Arya Vysya community also visit the temple for Tailabhisheka and puja before performing weddings or auspicious events.
This information has been shared by community elders Shri Laxmikant N. Manokar, Shri Shankar Rao Purankar, Shri Baburao Eraskar, and others, with the hope that the younger generation and the people of Kalaburagi learn about this glorious history. The district-level Pallaki Bhovi Samaj organization is registered with the Karnataka Government and manages the temple and social programs, alongside the active state-level organization.
