TMC nominee not involved in Naidigram stir; people won’t accept him: Suvendu

KOLKATA: (Mar 22) Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari on Sunday asserted that the people of the Nandigram assembly seat will not accept the ruling TMC candidate as he was not involved in the anti-land acquisition movement two decades ago.

Nandigram in Purba Medinipur district was the epicentre of the anti–land acquisition movement in 2007 during the Left Front regime. The protests against a proposed chemical hub became a turning point that weakened the Left’s three-decade rule and propelled Mamata Banerjee’s rise to power.

Adhikari, as a Trinamool Congress leader then, had been in the forefront of the agitation. He joined the BJP in 2020, months before the Lok Sabha elections held next year.
