Two Hippopotamuses safely arrive Arrive at Jammu Zoo from Chennai by Train

In a remarkable wildlife logistics operation, two hippopotamuses were successfully transported from Chennai Central railway station to Jammu Tawi railway station, marking another example of strong coordination between the J&K Wildlife Department and Indian Railways.

The animals were brought in a special parcel coach attached to Andaman Express, completing the 2,804-km journey in about 51 hours, which is significantly faster and less stressful for animals compared to road transport. A dedicated team of wildlife experts and veterinarians accompanied the animals throughout the journey, ensuring proper care, food, and water.

After arriving at Jammu Railway Station on March 13, the hippopotamuses were safely transported to Jammu Zoo.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager Uchit Singhal said the successful operation highlights the strong coordination between railway staff and wildlife experts. Earlier on March 3, two Himalayan Black Bears and two Leopard Cats were also transported from Jammu to Chennai via Train No. 16032.

The arrival of the new animals is expected to boost tourism and attract more visitors to Jammu Zoo.
