A 20-year-old Turkish-Swiss woman has made history in Zurich after becoming the first headscarf-wearing politician elected to the city’s municipal council. Vera Çelik, representing the Social Democratic Party, won 4,772 votes in the local election. Her victory has been widely welcomed as a milestone for Muslim representation and religious freedom in Switzerland, where debates over headscarf restrictions and discrimination have been ongoing in recent years.
