Srinagar Police Books Misinformation Network; FIR Registered at Cyber Police Station
Srinagar, March 3: In a decisive move against the spread of fake news, Srinagar Police has registered an FIR against a network of news channels, digital platforms, and individuals allegedly involved in circulating misinformation to disrupt peace in the Valley.
Officials said the accused were engaged in systematically sharing fabricated and unverified content designed to incite unrest and create social disharmony. Terming the alleged activity a “serious threat” to public order and national integrity, police said strict action will be taken against those found responsible.
An FIR (No. 01/2026) has been lodged at the Cyber Police Station, and several social media accounts have been identified during the preliminary investigation. “Handlers of multiple profiles have been summoned to the Cyber Cell for questioning. The investigation is progressing, and further legal action will follow based on evidence,” a police spokesperson said.
The crackdown comes amid growing concerns over coordinated misinformation campaigns targeting the region through online platforms.
Srinagar Police has urged citizens and media organizations to verify facts from official sources before publishing or sharing sensitive content. “Dissemination of fake or inflammatory material will invite stringent legal consequences,” the spokesperson warned.
Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining peace and stability in the region, emphasizing zero tolerance towards any attempt to disturb communal harmony.
