Over 1 lakh birds of 107 species recorded in Kaziranga waterbird estimation
GUWAHATI: (Feb 25) A total of 1,05,540 birds belonging to 107 species were recorded during the 7th Kaziranga Waterbird Estimation conducted last winter across Kaziranga–Laokhowa–Burhachapori floodplain complex, an official said on Wednesday.
The findings reaffirm the landscape as one of the most significant wintering waterbird assemblages in the Brahmaputra valley and an important node within the Central Asian Flyway, the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve official said.
Major species documented include grazing waterfowl, dabbling ducks, diving ducks, marsh specialists, waders, storks, cormorants and piscivorous raptors, reflecting the presence of deep perennial beels, shallow mudflats, vegetated marshes and riparian corridors within a connected floodplain matrix.
