“Attacks on Kashmiris ‘Politically Motivated’, Says HP CM Sukhu; Assures Zero Tolerance”
Srinagar, Feb 19: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Thursday termed allegations of frequent attacks on Kashmiri migrants and students in Himachal Pradesh as “rare” and often “politically motivated,” asserting that such incidents are sometimes exaggerated to create fear.
Addressing concerns over the safety of Kashmiris in the hill state — a popular tourist and educational destination for people from the Valley — Sukhu said his government follows a strict zero-tolerance policy toward any act of violence.
Referring to a recent incident, the Chief Minister stated that he had immediately ordered a probe and ensured the arrest of the accused within 24 hours. “We acted swiftly. The accused were arrested within a day. We have zero tolerance for such acts,” he said.
Sukhu emphasized that isolated incidents should not be projected as a widespread problem. “Very few such incidents take place. For centuries, our Kashmiri brothers and sisters have been coming to Himachal. It is like their second home,” he added.
He also revealed that he had discussed the issue with Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, highlighting coordination between the two governments to ensure the safety of migrants, students, and tourists.
“There is no such environment where these incidents are common. Often, one or two people try to portray isolated cases as something much bigger. Across Himachal Pradesh, people from Kashmir live peacefully,” Sukhu said.
The Chief Minister further alleged that certain narratives are sometimes spread deliberately for political gain. He claimed that individuals associated with Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) also raise such issues for political purposes, adding that some elements attempt to create negativity by magnifying isolated events.
Urging the Kashmiri community not to feel intimidated, Sukhu encouraged them to continue their business and educational activities without fear. He advised anyone facing threats to immediately contact the police by dialing the emergency helpline number 112, assuring prompt action from the authorities.
