A Touch of Modernity in the Courtyard of History: The Heritage Malda Town Station Gets a New Look under the Amrit Bharat Project

The ancient land of Malda, nourished by the alluvial soil of the Mahananda and Kalindi rivers, evokes images of grand architectural ruins and serene mango orchards. The name “Maldah” or “Malda” itself carries a rich legacy. According to historians, it is derived from the Persian word “Mal” (wealth) and the Sanskrit word “Dah” (water body), together meaning a land abundant in wealth and surrounded by rivers and waterways. Others believe the name originates from the “Malo” tribe community that once inhabited the region.
Malda is like a living museum. Just a short distance from the station stands the majestic Baro Sona Mosque, its stone facade still bearing the exquisite architectural imprints of the Bengal Sultanate. Passing by Firoz Minar or Dakhil Darwaza and standing before the vast grandeur of the Adina Mosque in Pandua, one feels as though time itself has paused in a distant past.
For decades, Indian Railways has sustained both the tourism industry and the economy of Malda. Whether it is the Gour Express from Sealdah or the Vande Bharat Express from Howrah, the railway network has brought Malda closer to Kolkata. Beyond passenger transport, the railways have played a crucial role in strengthening the local economy by transporting Malda’s world-famous Fazli mangoes and silk products to various parts of India. For decades, Malda Town Station has served as the gateway to the region’s Nawabi history for both Domestic and International Tourists.
Now, however, the context is changing. Under the “Amrit Bharat Station” project, Malda Town Station is being transformed into a new avatar. This is not merely routine renovation, but a remarkable blend of modernity and heritage. With an investment of ₹35 crore, the station is undergoing extensive modernization aimed at providing maximum passenger comfort and world-class services.
Under this project, numerous new facilities are being added. The station’s exterior is being redesigned with a completely new and visually appealing facade. A spacious new circulating area will ensure smoother movement. The new concourse area will feature advanced air-cooling and exhaust systems to keep the premises comfortable even during heavy crowds. Platforms are being upgraded and resurfaced to enhance passenger safety. Adequate drinking water will be provided through water booths, along with luxurious modern waiting halls, lounges, and a food court. A massive roof plaza is also being constructed. For smart connectivity, digital display boards, advanced CCTV surveillance, and modern information kiosks are being installed, elevating the station to a new standard. Multi-level parking facilities, improved lifts, and escalators will give the station an ultra-modern, airport-like appearance.
Today, Malda Town Station is no longer just a railway junction; under the Amrit Bharat project, it envisions becoming a new gateway to development in North Bengal. This modernization will go beyond passenger convenience—it is expected to usher in a new wave in Malda’s tourism industry. Modern amenities will attract more domestic and international tourists, directly benefiting local hotels, transport services, and handicraft businesses. Improved infrastructure means greater investment and expanded employment opportunities.
When the blue lights of a train illuminate the platform of Malda Station at night, they reflect the dream of a new Malda—one that carries the melodies of Gambhira folk songs and the ancient heritage of Adina and Gaur in its heart, while speeding toward development aboard the modern trains of the Amrit Bharat project. Malda Town Station today is not just a destination; it marks the beginning of a bright future.
