Tragedy in Meghalaya: 18 Killed in Coal Mine

A massive explosion occurred at an illegal "rat-hole" coal mine in the Thangsku area of East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, on Thursday morning. The blast has resulted in at least 18 confirmed deaths, with several other miners still feared trapped deep inside the narrow shafts.
Key Details of the Incident
The Cause: Preliminary investigations suggest the blast was triggered by a high-intensity dynamite explosion used during illegal mining activities.
The Victims: Many of the deceased are believed to be migrant labourers from neighbouring Assam. One survivor with critical burn injuries is currently undergoing treatment in Shillong.
Rescue Efforts: Teams from the NDRF (National Disaster Response Force) and SDRF are currently on-site, though difficult terrain and the risk of further collapses are hampering the search for survivors.
Official Response: * PM Narendra Modi expressed deep grief and announced an ex-gratia of ₹2 lakh for the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for those injured.
Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma has ordered a comprehensive inquiry, stating that strict legal action will be taken against those responsible for the illegal operation.
