Unsafe Highways: Koraput Bus Drivers Accuse Administration of Inaction

Koraput | Feb 1, 2026 - Bus drivers in Koraput have urged the district administration to immediately identify accident-prone black spots and install radium lights along highways, citing a sharp rise in road mishaps after recent road repairs. Members of the Koraput Bus Drivers’ Association alleged that despite repeated representations, no concrete steps have been taken to address the safety concerns.

Drivers claimed that due to the absence of clearly marked black spots, reflectors, and radium indicators, more than two to three accidents are occurring every week on different stretches of the highway. They said the situation has worsened after road repair works, as safety infrastructure was ignored.

“We have repeatedly informed the administration about these dangers, but there has been no response or action so far,” said Laxmikant Majhi, a senior member of the association. He added that bus drivers are left to face the consequences without any government support. “If a driver collapses or meets with an accident, there are no facilities or immediate assistance provided by the government,” he alleged.

The drivers also pointed out the lack of proper road mapping and absence of cement poles displaying destinations and distances, which often leads to confusion, especially during night travel. This frequently results in disputes with bus drivers from other districts and states.

Majhi further stated that buses from other states face severe difficulties while navigating Koraput’s ghats and narrow roads. “Without proper measurements or warning signs, both local and outside drivers struggle simultaneously, leading to frequent controversies and accidents,” he said.

The association has demanded urgent administrative intervention to prevent further loss of life and ensure safer travel conditions in the district.
