Odisha Govt Sanctions Rs 91 Crore for Modernisation of Koraput Bus Stand
Koraput | Jan 19, 2026 - In a major boost to transport infrastructure in southern Odisha, the state government has sanctioned Rs 91 crore for the redevelopment of the Koraput bus stand into a modern, multi-storey bus terminal. The project aims to provide improved passenger amenities, better traffic management and enhanced safety, addressing long-pending demands of commuters and transport operators.
The existing Koraput bus stand, constructed nearly 32 years ago, has deteriorated significantly over time. Recently, pieces of concrete reportedly fell from the roof of the upper floor, raising serious safety concerns. To prevent any mishap, the authorities decided to demolish the ageing structure. At present, the ground floor houses shops and limited seating facilities for passengers, which are inadequate considering the daily footfall.
Thousands of passengers rely on the bus stand every day, and with a steady increase in bus movement, the need for a safer and more organised terminal had been repeatedly highlighted. During the previous government’s tenure, a proposal for a modern bus terminal was prepared but could not be implemented due to various reasons.
Keeping these issues in view, a meeting was held around three months ago under the chairmanship of Koraput Collector Manoj Satyawan Mahajan, with participation from officials of OSRTC, Koraput municipality and the Odisha State Police Housing and Welfare Corporation (OPHWC). Subsequently, the government approved and released funds to OPHWC, which will execute the project.
As per the approved plan, a four-storey modern bus terminal will be built over 3.64 acres, on the lines of the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bus Terminal in Bhubaneswar. The facility will feature separate entry and exit points, shopping areas, a Mission Shakti café, driver rest rooms, drinking water facilities, OSRTC offices and toilets. Once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve passenger convenience and streamline traffic flow in Koraput.
