CUO to Host National Workshop on Uniform Scientific and Technical Terminology for Indian Languages (Odia, Hindi & Sanskrit)

The Department of Hindi, Central University of Odisha (CUO), in collaboration with the Bharatiya Bhasha Samiti, Ministry of Education, Government of India, will organise a two-day national workshop on ‘Uniform Scientific and Technical Terminology for Indian Languages’ (Odia, Hindi & Sanskrit) on 19–20 January 2026 at the university campus in Sunabeda. The Vice-Chancellor (I/c.) of the University, Prof. N. C. Panda, conveyed his best wishes for the successful conduct of the programme and expressed hope that the workshop would enhance the linguistic skills of all participants.

India’s rich linguistic diversity is unparalleled, yet the uneven growth of scientific and technical vocabulary across languages continues to pose challenges in education, research, translation, and knowledge exchange. Although Hindi, Odia, and Sanskrit possess vast lexical traditions, the absence of uniform technical terminology has limited their effective use in modern scientific discourse. In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which advocates promotion of science and technology education in Indian languages, the workshop aims to develop a coordinated and user-friendly framework for standardised terminology.

The programme will undertake a comparative study of the lexical resources of Hindi, Odia, and Sanskrit and explore methods for creating common scientific and technical vocabulary that can be widely adopted in academics and research.

Many eminent scholars and experts in language and technology, including Prof. R. S. Sarraju, Prof. Satya Narayan Panda, Dr. Konkimalla Giridhar Rao, Shri Hariram Pansari, Shri Surendra Samal, and Shri Pradeep Kumar Sahu, will participate in in-depth deliberations during the event.

Established in 2009 by an Act of Parliament, the Central University of Odisha, located in the picturesque Koraput Valley, presently comprises 20 departments offering undergraduate, postgraduate, integrated, and research programmes. The Department of Hindi, founded in 2015, has been actively engaged in teaching and research, as well as in the promotion of language, literature, and cultural activities.
